Excellence Awards for IPC Lecturers

By Moira Blake.

IPC recently recognised excellence in teaching and research with awards presented at the Commencement Ceremony in the Regent Theatre.

The Most Influential/High Quality Research Award went to Gillian Claridge, an Assistant Dean and staff member at IPC since 2002. Her particular interest in the area of graded readers for ESOL students arose from teaching of reading at foundation and degree levels. She is currently completing a PhD on the perceptions of learners and teachers at IPC concerning graded readers. Gillian has published articles in refereed linguistics journals together with conference presentations. She serves on the IPC Research Committee and organised the annual symposium of the Applied Linguistics Association of New Zealand held at IPC in 2007. Gill also trains teachers for the Trinity London qualifications in TESOL

Chakrit Tiebtienrat received the Most Promising Researcher Award. He has published articles on international relations topics in both English and Thai in academic journals, contributed two chapters to a book on International Security in the United States and given papers on social conflict in Thailand. He teaches full-time at IPC while also working on his PhD through Canterbury University. Last year he co-chaired the Palmerston North Branch of the New Zealand Institute of International Affairs. Cha, as he is known on campus, joined IPC in 2008.

The third award went to Bridget Percy for Excellence in Teaching. Since 2000, Bridget has contributed to the Trinity TESOL courses held at IPC, facilitating workshops in the areas of language awareness, teaching methodology, teaching practice, and the development of teaching materials. Bridget has a wide background of experience at primary, secondary, and tertiary levels, particularly in bilingual and ESOL teaching. She is a passionate teacher with a strong belief in student-centred learning that fits well with IPC’s philosophy of catering for the individual learning needs of students inside and outside the classroom.

IPC President, Professor Wayne Edwards, commented, “These awards demonstrate IPC’s commitment to promoting and recognising high quality performance by staff in their teaching and research.”
