World Environment Day effort by IPC Student Association’s Environment Committee
By Reo Takaoka and Moira Blake
Armed with spades borrowed for the occasion, five members of the Environment Committee teamed up on 3rd June with other people from the local Summerhill community, including City Council officers, to take part in the Green Corridors Community Arbor Day Planting event. This took place in the Waicola Drive area of the Titoki Reserve Walkway area of Summerhill. The whole group of about 20 people planted 380 trees that Sunday afternoon and chatted over refreshments afterwards. Their special effort for World Environment Day was part of a long term planting strategy. 7,500 trees were planted during 2009 and the total number planned for this year is 11,000.
Despite the damp weather, the students enjoyed having the opportunity to work with the local people, learn how to plant baby New Zealand native trees and chat with members of the local green community. They were able to tell the local people about IPC’s Environment Committee – a new committee this year - and what they are doing to try to make IPC campus more environmentally friendly. As well as their efforts on campus, the committee members hope to have twice as many students involved in the next community tree planting event.
