Foundation students preparing to enter their Diploma / Degree year in April

For the Foundation students who started their study in April last year, the coming Term 1 will be the time to enter their chosen Diploma or Degree courses. It is a step up from finishing the English learning program to starting the content-driven program in English. This move will certainly be a challenge for the students, so in order to prepare them, an "Introduction to Academic Skills" paper is provided over the Summer Term.

In this paper, a student will learn the essential skills required to do their next courses, including: how to take notes during a lecture, how to make a good presentation, reading comprehension of academic articles/journals, individual study methods, etc.

"The most frequent question from students, especially those who have just started their Diploma/Degree courses is how to write an essay. The students will learn step by step from collecting data, organizing material, and how to cite references, so the students will be able to study effectively," Assistant Dean ESOL/FEP Donal Crawford said.

There are also sessions where the current Diploma and Degree lecturers, as guest lecturers, hold a mock class to give the students an idea of what they are going to enter. Some are also using the actual course material.

"No matter what subject you are going to take for your Diploma/Degree course, the skill to study in English is very important. With this paper, we hope to equip the students better for their future study," Donal said.
