"Introduction to Sushi" for Visiting Primary School Students
A Visit to IPC by St. James School Students
By Shirley Ghozalli. Edited by Moira Blake.
The summer sun was shining when a group of 25 Year 1 pupils from St. James Primary School visited IPC Campus on Friday, 5th February. They were welcomed by the students from the English Language Skills and Spoken English class, taught by Jane Rainford, which is a part of the Diploma course. Then they gathered in the IPC dining hall for the lesson of the day: How to make sushi.
First, the pupils washed their hands and sat at the dinner tables set aside for them. Then they were divided into several groups. Each group had an IPC student assigned to it, and this student brought over the ingredients for the group. The children were very enthusiastic and they asked many questions at each step of the sushi making. The IPC students tried their best to answer in proper English as they showed the children how to mix the cooked rice with rice vinegar or when they were helping the school students to cut the carrots and the cucumbers. It was a perfect occasion for the students to practise their English as well as for the school students to learn about other cultures.
"It was a great time because we had the opportunity to speak with local kids in English," said Nobuyoshi Ishii (a 2007 student from Japan) and another student, Son Dien ‘Lee' Nguyen (a 2008 student from Vietnam), added, "I was happy to make sushi with the children. They made me remember my childhood and I was proud of the sushi they had made."

"Yes, that's it!" Junichi Aramaki (a 2006 student) encouraging the school students to participate.
