Right after Sakura Festival, on Sunday 20th September, the Students' Day Out event was held with 2 main items on the program: Nothing but Hoops - a 3 on 3 Basketball Tournament, and a Charity Music Concert.

Nothing but Hoops (3 on 3 Basketball Tournament)

The venue for Nothing but Hoops was the Recreation Centre. It was organized by students from the Diploma of International Sports Studies programme, who invited players from the local community to take part.

There were 10 teams competing in this tournament, including 4 teams from IPC. One of the organizers, Shohei Fukata, a 2006 student who is also a member of a local basketball group, said that he received good feedback from the participants after the tournament. "I was very happy to receive their emails and feel that our hard work was worthwhile. I want to thank everyone who helped us."

Charity Music Concert

The Charity Music Concert was to raise funds to support the Child Cancer Foundation. Featured on the programme were local performers, Kane Parsons' Smokey Feels band; Ian Farmer's Palmerston Music Planet; UCOL Performing Arts Students, Joe Hill; Jesus Japan; and EFEKT. A total of 12 groups of performers, 5 from IPC, entertained the crowd under a clear spring sky in front of the IPC library.

A project team of 15 students made up the core management committee for the concert. Their preparation started 2 months before the day, and included setting up the stage, managing the schedule for the performers, arranging for representatives of the charity to be at the concert, and advertising the event.

The leader of the project team, Kotaku Iha (a 2006 student), commented, "We are very grateful for the help and support we received from many students as well as from the professional musicians who were willing to perform voluntarily. Thank you very much!"

The students managed to raise about NZ$1500 for the Child Cancer Foundation and it was indeed a worthwhile effort.
