The 2009 IPC Students Association (IPCSA) held its first General Assembly for the new academic year on Thursday, 14th May in the Recreation Centre. It was attended by both students and staff members.

A performance from the Taiko Drum Team signified the opening of the assembly. Following the performance, the Drum Team Captain Rei Fujimoto and a member of the team, Vutinun 'Taro' Prutisart, announced that the Taiko Drum Team were recruiting for new members and encouraged students to join the team.

Next, the Masters of Ceremony of the event, Nathan Prince and Timothy Bunting, leapt dramatically onto the stage and welcomed the audience. First, they called on IPC President Wayne Edwards to speak.

Wayne came up onto the stage, introduced himself and delivered a short speech, encouraging the students to study hard, have fun, be proud of IPC and make the most of every minute they spend at IPC.

Next, IPCSA President Gregory 'Greg' Ng gave a welcome speech. As a third year student, Greg is involved in many activities inside and outside IPC Campus. In his speech, Greg revealed that the goal of SA this year is for all the students to unite, grow and work together. "Look at ourselves and start talking to other students, get to know other cultures, because at the end of the day, IPC is the students, not the staff or the buildings."

After the inspiring speech, Greg introduced this year's Core Members of IPCSA. Starting with Timothy Bunting as Vice President, Greg introduced 12 other Core Members who are in charge of various committees such as the Event Committee, Fashion Show Committee, Charity Committee, Recycling Committee, JCR (Junior Common Room) Committee, Student Support Committee, Yearbook Committee, Assembly Committee, and IT Committee.

The introduction of the Representatives of each Nationality came next. Each representative came up onto the stage, gave a short speech and then said something in her/his own native language. This year, there are 12 nationality representatives participating in IPCSA. They are from Brazil, India, Indonesia, Japan, Malaysia, New Caledonia, New Zealand, South Korea, French Polynesia (Tahiti), Taiwan, Thailand, and Vietnam.

After that, the Dean of International Studies Peter Finch gave several notices from IPC and summaries of the recent events like Orientation Week, Hall Leader/Assistant Hall Leader Training Session, Powhiri and Commencement Ceremony. He also encouraged students to come to the next assembly as well as to be involved in charity works such as the Red Cross.

An introduction of the Education outside the Classroom (EOC) activities by IPC staff members, Gavin Mardon and James Oliver, followed next. They played a slideshow of photos taken from several past activities, such as the South Island trip, rock climbing, sheep shearing, Relay for Life and horse riding. Not only that, they also sang an interesting rap song about EOC.

Towards the end, IPCSA President Greg Ng came back on stage and extended his congratulations to the IPC team who won the International Volleyball competition between Massey and IPC on 10th May. The presentation of the trophy ended the 2009 IPCSA's first General Assembly. The next General Assembly will be on 17th July.
