Japanese - Opens World's Possibilities
By Zebunisso Alimova
What comes to mind when thinking of school holidays? First and foremost: very little studying, or none at all, plus lots of sleep (or sleepless nights), sugar rushes and movies, and heaps of fun. School holidays are not usually associated with more study, or having to learn something. But for 33 high school students from all over New Zealand, on the weekend of 12th and 13th of July learning was the essential part.

It was the second Intensive Weekend IPC held this year. And for those who have never heard of our Intensive Weekends before, the main theme for the weekend is Japanese. This event was created to help high school students see the deeper value of studying Japanese at school, and to help them familiarize themselves more with the culture in the almost native environment of IPC.
Throughout the weekend, students had opportunities to practise their Japanese, learn new skills in sports, art and even the culinary department! The Kendo activity again proved to be the favourite, with Shodo and Sushi coming second! The high school students themselves organized the grand finale. Using vocabulary they had learnt, they performed skits for their parents, friends and "senseis" - in Japanese of course.

As usual, towards the end, hugs and contact details were exchanged, and a few tears were shed. Requests were made to extend future intensive courses, and make them 3 days long or even a week. Some students mentioned that they cannot wait to come to IPC to study.
If you decide to be part of our next intensive weekend, which will run later on this year, please let us know by calling 0800 FOR IPC (367472) or e-mail us using this form.
You won't regret it!
