Language Studies / Japanese Studies
Language Studies Major
Teaching is a very popular career choice, especially for those who wish to travel after graduation. This endorsement is designed as an introduction to teaching either English or Japanese to non-native speakers. As well as learning a new language, you must improve your own language skills (either English or Japanese) and gain an understanding of how languages are acquired.
Japanese Studies Major
Many speakers of other languages also wish to become proficient in Japanese language or to combine Japanese language and culture studies for their degree. Some students complete the one-year Diploma of Japanese Studies or Diploma of Japanese Studies (Advanced) before advancing to the BIS and cross-crediting the language papers. The several hundred Japanese students at IPC are a wonderful resource for practising the language every day!
Graduates from these Majors will be Language Specialists, Language Studies students will have the ability to teach English to Speakers of other Languages Internationally. Graduates of the Japanese Studies Major will have a very good level of spoken and written Japanese Language, and an in-depth understanding of Japanese culture and business.

Evie Aitcheson
Translator/Administrator, JPNZ International
The degree I gained from IPC has opened up a variety of opportunities for me both in NZ and overseas. At JPNZ International I am responsible for translating automotive manuals from Japanese to English, including repair manuals and other texts relating to vehicles. I also carry out translation of any Japanese documents such as newspaper articles, export certificates, birth certificates or any business documents. IPC was a great foundation for my career and future, enabling me to communicate in Japanese, and learn about business in Japan.
